Looking ahead, the Outreach Committee is excited about a new idea for our summer project. Tentatively called “Give a Picnic,” the committee is putting together plans to host a barbecue (hamburgers, hotdogs, and the trimmings) for a local organization. Since this would be a first time event, we would limit our picnickers to 50 people in addition to volunteers helping on the day of festivities. We haven’t zeroed in on the organization, but the picnic would be delivered to the recipients’ doors to solve the transportation issue. We would happily entertain anyone’s suggestions and, so far, have come up with a list of general organizations (such as an assisted living center, a center for abused women and children, or a group home). Depending on how much we can raise, we hope to “theme” the picnic to age, such as simple outdoor games for kids or seat games for people in assisted living situations. Please contact any Outreach Committee member for more information or to provide your suggestions.

The Road Home received close to 400 Easter Baskets this year, with slightly more than 10% of these – 45 – possible through the generous donations from the St. James community. The baskets delivered to the non-profit agency assisting individuals and families experiencing homelessness were enough to provide for every child in the center, plus some. According to Volunteer Coordinator Kelsey Stark, each child was able to pick his or her own basket and the few baskets leftover were given to the single women in the shelter. Extra candy – not placed in individual baskets – was handed out at the men’s shelter. “This year was a huge success,” Stark said. “Everyone in shelter got to enjoy Easter this year, which was great.”

For our part, the Outreach Committee tried to diversify the baskets, alternating among Beanie Babies, coloring books, bubbles, books and other stuff either donated or purchased through your monetary donations. We also included handfuls of the traditional Easter candy – jellybeans and malted eggs – and the not-so-traditional candy – mini chocolate bars – “dressed” for the occasion. Heather Darrata, from the LDS Church, also contributed to the St. James’ project, giving a dozen coloring books and packs of crayons. Incidentally, Intermountain Healthcare contributed close to 300 baskets, which, because of their comparative size, says a lot for the generosity of our parish.

Join us for a “guys’ day out” on Sunday, June 10th, 2012 after the 10 a.m. service. We will be organizing a men’s hike in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Our destination will be TBD, depending on the majority decision. It can be as simple as Silver Lake, or as difficult as Lake Blanche and beyond. Bring a picnic lunch and come enjoy some community with the men of our parish. Please contact Tim Yanni for more information and to let us know you’ll be attending. Hiking is good for the body, the mind, and the soul. Let’s share an enjoyable experience in the mountains together. And if it rains? We’ll go bowling instead.

Patients, staff and volunteers at Alta View Hospital always are grateful for the used magazines St. James parishioners donate. They are used in waiting rooms and the emergency room, as well as distributed to people who must stay in the hospital overnight or for several days. All members of St. James are invited to donate their used magazines, which can be dropped off in the basket in the office. Please know current-year magazines can be used again. So there is no need to throw them away — even if it is in a recycling bin. One hint though: it probably is a smart idea to cut off the label off the covers before contributing them. There really is no reason to have your name and address circulating among strangers for no reason.
